Barrie, Ontario is located about 45 minutes north of Toronto, and is situated on the shore of Lake Simcoe, on Kempenfelt Bay. Barrie was founded back in the early 1800s, and in 1833, was named in honor of Sir Robert Barrie. As with many other cities in Southern Ontario, it became a focus for and a terminus of the Underground Railroad. Barrie is now part of the Golden Horseshoe, and serves as the home of many commuters who work in the Greater Toronto Area.
